Animals Everywhere

We feel like we have our very own animal kingdom in our classroom. Garrett brought his rabbit named Charlie to stay with us for a few days. Jack brought his turtle and Sophie and her Dad brought button quail eggs for us to watch hatch. We've had a lot of fun learning about animals

A Look at the Week

We have planned a lot of fun activities to go along with our unit about Johnny Appleseed this week. Thanks to all of you for sending items to make this unit more enjoyable for the children. You are all so generous and I am truly grateful for your support.

School pictures will be made Wednesday morning. Notes were in the folder today about the uniform requirements for that day. Details are also listed on our school website.

The children will be performing the Mississippi program again for the student body during the assembly on Friday morning.

Friday will be a sixty percent day. The children will be dismissed at one o'clock.

Please let us know this week if you will be able to drive or accompany us on our trip to the fire station next week.

Your children are such a blessing to me. Thank you for allowing me to work with them at OUS.

A Work in Progress

This is my first attempt at publishing a slideshow on the blog. I hope to do a better job as time goes by. This is a learning process for me since I have never used this program before. Please let me know if you have any problems accessing it. I hope you'll enjoy seeing the pictures from our field trip to Mud Island and the Southaven park. Each show will only hold about fifty photos, so I'll try to publish the Mississippi program and tasting tea pictures as soon as possible. Enjoy!

Thank you very much for coming to our program.

Mississippi Program and Tasting Tea

The children had a lot of fun learning about Mississippi. The program and the tea were wonderful and we couldn't have done it without such a supportive group of parents. Thanks to all of you for sending the foods, drinks, and paper products that were needed to teach the children about our great state. We hope this will be a special memory for them from their year in first grade and help them retain some facts about Mississippi.

What a great day with our family and friends!

A Few Announcements

Our field trip to Mud Island was great last Thursday! We really appreciate so many parents going with us to help take care of the children. We're sorry about all of the changes that had to be made at the last minute, but we thank you for understanding!

We will continue our study of Mississippi this week. The children are looking forward to sharing a special program and tasting tea with you on Friday afternoon at one-thirty in the gym. We hope you will be able to join us. We will be sending a note home in the folder on Monday afternoon to ask for your help with some special items for the tea. We'll be very grateful for you help.

The Scholastic Book Fair is still going on at OUS through Wednesday of this week. Please feel free to come and shop with your child if you have time.

First Graders with Dr. Pratt

We've had a great day! The children got to pretend that they were doctors and listen to their partner's heart, look in the ears and throat, and take blood pressure. They put on lab coats and got to pretend to be a doctor. Thanks to Dr. Heidi Pratt for coming to share about her job this morning.

Our trip to the post office went well and now Paddington is on his way. We can't wait to hear from the people that he visits first. Ms. Angela that works at the post office took us on a tour and showed us what happens to our mail before it gets to our houses. We had a lot of fun. Thanks Ms. Angela!

Sophie's dad is in the army and he came dressed in his uniform to talk to the children about his job. The children were fascinated and had a lot of questions for him. They learned a lot about the military and some of the special jobs that the men and women in the United States Army do for us each day. Thanks for coming Major Edwards and for your service to our country!

Ms. Tis came to first grade at the end of the day. We learned about her job at OUS and found out that she works a lot with the teachers. She even plans school sessions for them where they have to study and learn new things that will help them in the classrooms. She used to teach first grade and it was her favorite. She read a special book to us called "Wild About Books". Thanks Ms. Tis for sharing with us!

Mr. Frazier and His First Grade Friends

We had a busy day in first grade today. Ms. Julie Wilson came to talk to the children about her job as a nurse. She let the children wrap bandages around pretend wounds, take their blood pressure, use a stethoscope, give shots, and much more. We saw how important her job was and how much she helps people. Thanks for coming Ms. Julie!

The children went on a nature scavenger hunt. It was a lot of fun and they all worked in pairs to find the answers to each question on their list. Please let them tell you about all of the things they found. We tied this activity in with a story that we read, describing words, and a science lesson. It was a great time for all of us!

Another special treat that we had today with our community helpers unit was a visit with Mr. Frazier. He came to tell us what he does in his job as our headmaster. He has a lot of responsibilities and we learned about the things he does each day. He comes very early and stays very late to make sure that everything is taken care for us and for our teachers. He said that he loved being at OUS. He even told us that we were his first grade friends. It's pretty neat to get to visit with the headmaster.

Tomorrow we will have more visitors to tell you about. We're also going to the post office on a field trip. Please check back tomorrow to hear more details about our community helpers and our trip.
