Animals Everywhere

We feel like we have our very own animal kingdom in our classroom. Garrett brought his rabbit named Charlie to stay with us for a few days. Jack brought his turtle and Sophie and her Dad brought button quail eggs for us to watch hatch. We've had a lot of fun learning about animals

First Grade News

Ronald McDonald came to OUS this morning at ten o'clock to present a reading program. We're very grateful to Betsy and Andrew Smith for providing this opportunity for our children.

We'll be learning about community helpers this week in class. Julie Wilson, Heidi Pratt, Mr. Frazier, and Mrs. Tis will be coming to share details about their jobs in the community. If anyone else would like to volunteer to come, we would love to have you. Please send a couple of times that might work for you and we will try to work around your schedule if at all possible.

We will be going to the post office to send Paddington on his way on Thursday morning. If you would like to accompany us on this trip, please let us know. We always love having parents with us to share these experiences with the children. We'll leave OUS at ten o'clock and we should return around eleven fifteen.

We are planning a trip to Mud Island on Thursday, September 10th. We'll be leaving OUS at eight o'clock that morning. We are scheduled to meet with our tour guide at ten thirty in Memphis and then we will have lunch at Chuck E Cheese in Horn Lake right off of Interstate 55 on our way back to Oxford. More information will be sent about this at the end of the week.

We will try to schedule the field trips on different days throughout the year to try to accomodate different schedules. If you are unable to go to either of the trips above, please don't worry. Hopefully we'll have one in the near future that you will be able to attend.

We are planning a Mississippi tasting tea and a program for the afternoon of Friday, September 18th. We will begin at one thirty and we hope you will be able to join us.

Please have your children log into the Raz Kids website. Your user name will be ouschool. Click on your child's name and go to the bookroom to select your story. There are printable books to read on various levels and each one is coded to let you know which ones you can read or listen to and which ones have tests to go along with them. If your child has trouble with a test, please have him/her retake it to raise the score. The children may read directly off of the screen or you may print the books out to keep. The books will be recorded on a reading record to show how many books each child is reading. I'd like for the children to read at least one book per night. They may choose to read a book from Raz Kids, our class library, or one they have at home. Each child should move at his/her own pace and read as many books as desired throughout the week. I'm listing the book and grade levels below so you'll be able to see what levels are challenging for your child. Please let me know if you have any trouble accessing this program.

Reading Levels

Books D-J are on a first grade level.
Books K-P are on a second grade level.
Books Q-T are on a third grade level.
Books U-W are on a fourth grade level.
Books X-Z are on a fifth grade level

For your child's safety, please remember that children may not be dropped off in the morning before seven thirty. We want to make sure that there is someone in the gym to watch them and teachers are not on duty until that time.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to teach your children. They have been such a blessing to me and I will try to do my very best to provide them with a strong foundation in first grade. Thank you for allowing me to work with each one of them.
